12 Projects in 12 Months

It’s time to get to work.

I spent last year discarding a TON of personal things. Instruments, clothes, devices, anything and everything that wasn’t working for me or making my life easier or better, see ya!

But now I’m coming back down in 2026, needing to re-focus my creative energy that had gotten a little scattered in recent years. So I’ve decided to go through my graveyard of dead projects, and resurrect them like little cute unfinished zombie projects.

First up? Some comics!

Yep, I drew/wrote some comics back in like … 2014? And they never saw the light of day.

There are two comics that I’m focusing on. First was a comic featuring Chairface, the band that I headed up between 2012-2016ish. We were … okay. I didn’t practice enough and could never remember my lyrics. But music was very important to me at the time and I started messing around with the idea of releasing a Chairface comic. At the time, it starred me, Jay (our basssist), and Steve (our drummer at the time). My creative energy got a little out of control during that phase and I ended up trying to discard some projects to rein it in. That’s when the comics bit the dust.

So why resurrect it now?

I read it, and I thought some of the storylines were funny. I’d like to ink it in, swap out the character names and print a couple copies with a colour cover. I think it would be satisfying to do, and out of all the 12 projects I’ve lined up for this year, I think it’s the most achievable.

I don’t think I was being fair to myself when I chose to ‘only focus on music’ instead of letting my creativity do what it needed to do. Yeah, comics aren’t my forte, but life is short and it’s nice to like … do what you actually want to do with your time? Instead of worrying about everything being “great” or “profitable” or whatever. So for these comics, I want to finish them because I want them to be finished, and I’m curious what it would look like to actually finish a project like this for once.

I’ve also got an old comic starring a character named Spanky who has a butt for a face, and his friend Boogly. That one isn’t drawn, but the intent for that comic was for it to be very simply drawn, so I think I can whip something up. Reading through what was written previously, I thought it was pretty funny, but I haven’t reviewed it thoroughly yet. Will take another look. I definitely want to finish off that Chairface comic, but time will tell if I’ve got capacity to do the Boogly one.

What are the first steps?

1. Review what I’ve got for both projects. Read ’em both through from beginning to end.
2. Assess what I’ve got at my disposal. What would still need to be created, and do I have the time available this month (about an hour a day for the remaining 29 days of January) to get them both done? Or should I just do the Chairface one?
3. Figure out a gameplan. Do I need some other software for this or can I use like … Krita? I’ve used that in the past, right? Are there any art styles I’m looking to emulate as I ink this thing? I have no experience in making inked drawings look good, so I need to look at stuff I like to get an idea of what I should be doing.
4. Figure out what to do for the cover. I’ve put together cover art for previous books with bad results. How can I make this thing look awesome when printed? What size do I want it to be? Ideally I’d like to know that before I ink the thing so I can be sure that I’m working in the right resolution. Right? That’s how these things work, I think.

See, I’ve pencilled so many comics in my life but never properly finished one. This weird cycle ends this January.
